Brendan Johnston: Artist-in-Residence for the day

Brendan Johnston (b. 1984) graduated from McGill University in Montreal with a degree in Art History before pursuing a career as an artist. He studied drawing, painting, and sculpture at The Grand Central Atelier in New York, from which he graduated in 2012. He is devoted to representational painting and sculpture, and has of late concentrated his attention primarily on portraiture. In 2019, he was included in the BP Portrait Award, and his painting Arcus was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, and the Ulster Museum in Belfast. He has achieved acclaim for his stone and terra cotta sculptures. In 2022, he received The Society of Portrait Sculptors’ First Prize for his stone carving Tiburtinus II. In 2025, he received First Place in the National Sculpture Society Awards Exhibition in New York City. He was also included in the Southampton Arts Center’s East End Collected 8 exhibition. He most recently exhibited work at the MEAM Museum in Barcelona, Spain.

Brendan studied landscape painting with the Hudson River Fellowship in 2011. Since then, he has done plein air painting in Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Spain, California, Alaska, and across Eastern Long Island. He has exhibited his plein air and studio landscape works at galleries in Provincetown, Boston, New York, and Southampton.
