TALKS: Neil Slaughter
Join Professor Emeritus Neil Slaughter for an engaging lecture exploring the life, career, and enduring influence of celebrated American painter John Singer Sargent. Timed to the acclaimed Sargent & Paris exhibition at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this richly illustrated presentation traces Sargent’s rise from a gifted young portraitist in Paris to one of the defining artistic figures of the Gilded Age and early twentieth century.
Drawing from decades as both a practicing artist and art historian, Slaughter offers unique insight into Sargent’s painterly brilliance, artistic circle, and remarkable legacy, examining the artist not only through historical context, but also through the eye of a fellow painter. The lecture will explore Sargent’s early successes and controversies in Paris, his later triumphs in London and America, and the extraordinary technical mastery that continues to captivate audiences today.
Artist and educator Neill Slaughter graduated with a BFA from the University of Georgia in 1975 and received his MFA from Indiana University Bloomington in 1978. Until his retirement in 2016, Professor Slaughter taught fine arts and art history at the university level for nearly four decades, beginning at Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia before teaching and lecturing internationally in England, California, and New York. In 1993, he joined Long Island University in Southampton, where he taught for nearly twenty-five years before being awarded Professor Emeritus status in 2017.
A practicing artist whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, Slaughter’s extensive travels have deeply informed his paintings and lectures. Among his honors are a Ford Foundation Fellowship, a Scottish Arts Council Grant, a Loyola Marymount University research grant to Africa, and a Fulbright Fellowship to India. In 2003 he received Long Island University’s David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching, and in both 2008 and 2022 he mounted major retrospective exhibitions celebrating over fifty years of artistic achievement.

FILM: JOURNEY OF HOPE - The Art of Oscar Molina
Film Screening: Journey of Hope – The Art of Oscar Molina
Join us at the Southampton Arts Center for a special screening of Journey of Hope – The Art of Oscar Molina, a 45-minute documentary directed and produced by Lana Jokel.
The film offers an intimate look into the life and work of artist J. Oscar Molina, whose practice explores the intersections of politics, culture, and identity. Having immigrated to the United States from El Salvador, Molina views borders not as fixed realities, but as constructs—ideas that can be challenged, reimagined, and transcended through art.
Through painting and sculpture, Molina creates visual “bridges” that connect communities across cultural divides. His work invites viewers to reflect on their own perspectives while opening space for dialogue about shared histories, traditions, and the evolving nature of identity.
Presented as both a documentary and a catalyst for conversation, Journey of Hope highlights art as a powerful form of social practice—one that fosters understanding, exchange, and community connection.
A reception will follow the screening, offering guests the opportunity to continue the conversation and connect with fellow attendees.

Presence: The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder
(Opening Reception: July 25, 5–7 pm)
This exhibition uses seven thematic sections to explore presence through tender portraits, awe-filled landscapes, clear reportage, and spontaneous cityscapes. Spanning from Pictorialism and social documentary to Surrealism and street photography, around 100 photographs by about 70 artists—including Merry Alpern, Richard Avedon, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, Edward Steichen, and many others—form a dialogue across time and place through Glickman Lauder’s singular collection.
The show examines the human condition—joy, love, faith, grief, justice, and wonder—and asks what makes photography so powerfully present: how it preserves moments, people, and places, and what we seek when we look. Co-organized by the American Federation of Arts and Portland Museum of Art, Maine; curated by Anjuli Lebowitz, PhD. An accompanying free educational brochure is available, with a related Aperture book.

FILM: HEAARTBEAT
Join us on Thursday, August 6 for a special screening of HEAARTBEAT, an intimate documentary by Alexandra Fairweather exploring the life, work, and creative philosophy of the late sculptor John Chamberlain. Drawn from years of personal footage and unprecedented access, the film offers a rare portrait of Chamberlain not only as one of the most influential artists of the postwar era, but as a father, husband, friend, and endlessly curious creative force.
Filmed over seven years and featuring archival footage captured by Fairweather beginning in her teenage years, HEAARTBEAT moves beyond the public mythology surrounding Chamberlain to reveal the rhythms of his daily life, artistic process, humor, and humanity. The documentary traces his six-decade practice across crushed automobiles, foam, aluminum foil, photography, and other experimental mediums, while exploring his belief that art should create an experience that “makes your heart beat.”
At once deeply personal and historically resonant, HEAARTBEAT is both a portrait of a groundbreaking artist and a meditation on legacy, memory, and the enduring power of art.

Kids will learn simple design techniques while crafting wearable artworks they can proudly take home and share. From bold patriotic imagery to personal messages about what America means to them today, this hands-on workshop encourages creativity, storytelling, and imagination through art.

Center Stage Auditions: Gatsby
This fall, The Great Gatsby—the iconic novel that captures the glamour and complexity of Long Island’s Gold Coast in the 1920s—will come to life at Southampton Arts Center in a lively radio play adaptation directed by Michael Disher.
Auditions for Joe Landry’s The Great Gatsby, A Live Radio Play will take place on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3 at 4:30 PM at Southampton Arts Center (25 Jobs Lane, Southampton). Auditions will begin promptly; late arrivals will be accommodated at the director’s discretion.
Actors will read from provided sides and should be prepared to sing a verse from the 1920s standards “What’ll I Do?” and “Ain’t We Got Fun.”
Performances will run one weekend only: October 23–25, 2026, with showtimes on Friday at 7 PM, Saturday at 2 PM and 7 PM, and Sunday at 2 PM. Rehearsals will take place throughout September and October, with select early rehearsals possible in the spring.
“F. Scott Fitzgerald’s beloved classic comes to life as a radio broadcast in this spirited adaptation,” says director Michael Disher. “A small ensemble portrays more than two dozen characters, bringing forward a story of ambition, longing, and illusion set against the dazzling decadence of the Jazz Age.”
This is a non-union, unpaid production with a minimal rehearsal schedule; memorization and familiarity with the material are expected.1
The production calls for a flexible ensemble of approximately six actors (four men, two women), though casting may be adjusted to best suit those auditioning. The role of Jay Gatsby has already been cast.
Setting: Long Island and New York City, 1924
Reflecting on the play’s enduring relevance, Disher adds: “One hundred years later—ain’t we still got fun? This production celebrates Long Island through a story of love, power, privilege, and the pursuit of the American Dream.”

Starring Barbara Jo Howard and Jack Seabury, this intimate two-person play tells the true story of Ludwig’s parents, who fell in love through letters during World War II. What begins as a simple correspondence grows into a deeply moving romance shaped by distance, uncertainty, and hope.
Directed by Michael Disher, the production is a heartfelt reminder of the power of handwritten words and enduring connection. Set entirely through letters exchanged between a U.S. Army doctor stationed in Oregon and an aspiring actress in New York City, Dear Jack, Dear Louise is filled with warmth, humor, and tenderness.
