INDEPENDENCY: THE AMERICAN FLAG AT 250 YEARS

CURATED BY JOHN R. MONSKY + CHRISTINA M. STRASSFIELD

May 17, 2025 - July 19, 2025

INDEPENDENCY: THE AMERICAN FLAG AT 250 YEARS is a powerful and visually striking collection of American flags and historic textiles held by John Monsky. This collection of flags have bore witnesses to watershed moments in American history, and will be featured alongside the work of abstract painter Sean Scully.

Monsky’s flags, represent a lifelong collection that began in his boyhood, and has since served as the focal point of his series of live multi-media musical journeys through history, which he presents at Carnegie Hall and the nation’s top performance venues.  His “The Eyes of the World: From D-Day to VE Day,” performed with the Boston Pops from Boston’s Symphony Hall, is currently streaming on PBS.org.

The exhibition, combining both visual art and American history, will feature select flags and historic textiles from Monsky’s collection -- from a 1775 George Washington kerchief and a flag for the candidacy of “Abram” Lincoln to flags from the Apollo Missions, alongside Scully’s work. Insightful narrative, archival film and photography, material culture and historic documents, will enhance the visitor experience.

ORGANIC ABSTRACTION II: CONTEMPORARY OUTDOOR SCULPTURE

CURATED BY CHERYL SOKOLOW OF C FINE ART

June 7 - October 7

Organic Abstraction: Contemporary Outdoor Sculpture returns to the grounds of the Southampton Art Center for its 2nd season. The exhibition explores the materials, processes, and techniques of established, internationally recognized, museum-collected sculptors working within a formalist paradigm.

Appreciable is the artist's plight as they shape, mold and weld a negotiated balance between malleability and constraint dictated by their chosen material. Syntax, form, and the artistic process become the subject matter of each work, each being most immediately understood by its physical attributes engendering a pure, aesthetic experience, free of narrative.

BEYOND THE PRESENT: COLLECTING FOR THE FUTURE

CURATED BY NATASHA SCHLESINGER
AND CHRISTINA M. STRASSFIELD

July 26 - September 27

Listening to the voices of contemporary artists and engaging with their work is like stepping into the future. A collector of emerging artists must be bold, undeterred by naysayers, and have a vision that inspires others to follow. Christine Mack has built her dynamic collection by actively seeking out, meeting with, collecting, and supporting the young voices of our time. Her mission extends beyond collecting; she is deeply committed to nurturing these talents through mentorship, financial support, and the Mack Art Foundation Artist Residency.
