LOOK AT THE BOOK

ON VIEW FEBRUARY 24 - MAY 4

CURATED BY CHRISTINA M. STRASSFIELD

“LOOK AT THE BOOK” is a multimedia exhibition that pays homage to “Books.” The exhibition will focus on how contemporary artists have engaged with the book as a surface, structure, found object, philosophical, and literary guide. The works will include various types of books, accordion books, video books and audiobooks, graphic novels, sculpture, photography, and several site-specific installations created with and from books.

These 33 artists, by exploring literacy in their way, will celebrate the changing role of books in the digital age. They will also address issues such as literacy, freedom of speech, banned books, and the evolving role of books. We hope to shed light on the impact of these changes and spur conversations about their implications for society. We're excited to provide artists and community members a platform to engage with these critical topics through workshops, readings, and performances that will address these issues and hopefully create an ongoing dialogue. We will create art and have panel discussions, community talks, curator tours, and workshops.

BEYOND THE STREETS:

POST GRAFFITI

ON VIEW MAY 11 - JULY 20

CURATED BY ROGER GASTMAN

The concept of “POST GRAFFITI” encapsulates the genre's journey of rebellious subway artists, originating from 70’s and 80’s NYC, to the global movement they’ve inspired. The term signifies a shift from the illicit nature of traditional graffiti to a more accepted, legitimate art form in gallery settings. As the movement has progressed, artists associated with “POST GRAFFITI” continue to draw from the rich history of graffiti writing and the streets, forming a loose coalition that blurs and elevates their source inspiration through drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation.

“POST GRAFFITI” is at the core of “BEYOND THE STREETS”, representing the embodiment of a larger picture of how far it has all gone and how raw it still remains. Graffiti has become a cultural phenomenon that informs music, fashion, politics, entertainment, marketing, and, of course, contemporary art. It has been on the runways of major fashion houses and memorialized in books and documentaries.

ORGANIC ABSTRACTION: CONTEMPORARY OUTDOOR SCULPTURE

ON VIEW APRIL 25 FOR THE SEASON

CURATED BY CHERYL SOKOLOW

“ORGANIC ABSTRACTION: CONTEMPORARY OUTDOOR SCULPTURE”, explores the materials, processes, and techniques of nine internationally recognized, museum-collected sculptors working within a formalist paradigm. With an emphasis on syntax and form rather than subject matter, the handling of material and the artists’ processes become the subject of the work; each piece is most immediately identified and appreciated by its most basic physical attributes.
